Aside from his native Turkey, Barın Kayaoğlu spent his childhood and teenage years in Iraq and Lebanon. He received his B.A. and M.A. in political science from Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in history working with Melvyn Leffler at The University of Virginia.

Kayaoğlu is writing his dissertation on U.S. development aid to Turkey and Iran during the Cold War and the origins of anti-Americanism in the two countries. His research interests are the history of U.S. foreign relations and modern Middle East history.
